Workpackage 9: Economic assessment of the BiomarCaRE panel

This work package has the goal to integrate and extrapolate study results of the previous work packages with additional published data to estimate long-term clinical effectiveness, cost and cost-effectiveness of strategies based on the BiomarCaRE panel. We will evaluate a combination of selected biomarkers as a new additional test for the decision over statin treatment in primary prevention.
This work package will also support the design of a clinical study by using the model to select potentially cost-effective strategies and test cut-offs.

Description of Work

We will develop a decision-analytical model to estimate the long-term clinical effectiveness. Modelling provides a quantitative method to integrate prediction of cardiovascular risk with evidence-based data on the effectiveness of treatments and epidemiologic data on the natural history of cardiovascular disease to extrapolate study results to cardiac events and life expectancy. Country-specific data for population characteristics and care patterns are also integrated, allowing effectiveness estimation to be tailored to a specific country. Outcomes of our analyses will be numbers of cardiovascular events over a fixed number of years, expected life years and quality-adjusted life years
Based on this model for long-term effectiveness, we will apply health care system specific costs for cardiovascular disease and compared strategies. This will allow us to estimate lifetime costs and cost-effectiveness.
Since cardiovascular disease is a chronic disease, the time-horizon of the evaluation will be life-time. The target populations are age- and gender-specific cohorts, representative of the country for which the model is developed or subgroups of those. We will choose the perspective of the health-care system of the model country. This means that all direct medical and non-medical costs are included but no indirect costs
